The Italian Statistical Institute (Istat) presented the results of its annual survey on the structure and the level of competitiveness of the industrial and service enterprises. The Italian industrial sector is still marked by a massive presence (94.7%) of micro-enterprises (less than 10 employees). Therefore, its average dimension is very small. The main business sector by number of enterprises, employees and creation of value added is services, while industry in its real meaning represents 10% of the total enterprises. The service sector contributes most to the creation of value added, especially thanks to micro-enterprises which represent its main part. The value added by employee increases with the increase of the business dimension. Wages result higher in industry and lower in services and constructions. The same for the businesses’ gross profit. Employment in all sectors is concentrated in the North-western regions, with the exception of constructions, equally distributed between North-west and South. Labour cost decreases when moving southward.
