On 15 and 16 December took place in Rome the 10th National Conference of Statistics, focused on the need of making statistic surveys no more a simple information tool in the service of an elite, but rather an instrument helping all the citizens to gathering information useful to their choices and behaviours. It is therefore necessary the statisticians turn from “producers of information to generators of knowledge”. The Chairman of Istat, Mr Enrico Giovannini, announced substantial changes in his Institute: “in the Statistics 2.0 the production chain doesn’t stop at the moment of the diffusion of the information, but goes on taking care of how this information is brought to the final user of the media. In this way we can meet the needs of the highest number of individuals (and not only the members of the Government or a cultural or economic elite)”. The current situation is rather different, with a huge amount of data and very little attention to methods of survey.
