Istat has released provisional data on employed and unemployed in January 2011. Employed are 22,831,000 units, down by 0.4% (-83 thousand units) compared to December 2010. In comparison with the previous year, employment declined by 0.5% (-110 thousand units). The decrease in the month is due to both the male and the female component. The employment rate is equal to 56.7%, down by 0.2 percentage points from December and 0.4 percentage points from January 2010. The number of unemployed amounted to 2.145 thousand, an increase of 0.1% (+2 thousand units) compared to December. The result is a synthesis of the growth of female unemployment and the decline of the male. Year on year growth in the number of unemployed is 2.8% (+58 thousand units). For the third consecutive month the unemployment rate stood at 8.6%, an increase of 0.2 percentage points year on year. Continued growth in the rate of youth unemployment, which reached 29.4%. Inactive people aged 15 to 64 years increased by 0.5% (80,000 units) compared to the previous month. The inactivity rate is 37.8%, after three months when it was stable at 37.6%.
