According to Istat, the contractual hourly wages have remained steady in May and the increase on an annual basis was equal to 1.8%, as it was in April. The figure is lower than inflation that in May rose by 2.6% on a trend basis. In the average for the period January to May 2011 the index increased by 2% over the same period of 2010. The sectors that reported the largest increase in May compared to a year earlier are: textiles, clothing and leather manufacturing (4.1%), military / defense (4.0%), police (3.7%) and firefighters activities (3.4%). More limited increases for ministries, schools, regions and local authorities, national health service, all at +0.3%. Employees waiting for renewal at the end of May are 4.5 million, 34.7% of the total, with an average waiting time for the renewal of expired contracts of 17.1 months.
