According to ISTAT, in May 2011 the seasonally adjusted index of retail sales (current value that incorporates the dynamics of both quantities and prices) has fallen compared to April 2011, by 0.1%. In the average of the quarter March-May 2011, the index has registered a decrease of the same entity (-0.1%) over the previous three months. In comparison with April 2011, sales of food products decreased by 0.4% and non-food products showed no change. Compared to May 2010, the raw index marks a decline of 0.6%. Sales of food fall in trend terms by 0.5% and non-food products by 0.8%. In comparison with the month of May 2010 there was a reduction of 2.1% for the large distribution sales and an increase of 0.2% for firms operating in small shops. In the first five months of 2011, compared to the same period of 2010, the raw index decreased by 0.3%. Sales of food increased by 0.1% and non-food products decreased by 0.6%.
