According to Istat nearly 135 thousand businesses with employees were born in 2009, approximately 8 thousand less than the previous year, which corresponds to a birth rate of 9.6% (-0.4 percentage points compared to 2008).
The decline in the birth rate of enterprises with employees affected especially industry sectors (-0.8 percentage points) and construction (-1.4). In the other services the decrease in the birth rate was only 0.2 percentage points. In trade, finally, the birth rate has remained steady at 9.7%. The regions of the South, along with Lazio, have higher birth rates than the other regions, in spite of a significant reduction compared to 2008.
The mortality of firms with employees is unchanged between 2008 and 2009, compared both to total business and the various macro sectors, recording little differences at regional level.
In 2009 the population dynamics of businesses with employees, i.e. the difference between born and ceased companies, shows a positive balance equal to 0.7. Individual businesses constitute about 50% of new businesses with employees. 36% is driven by male entrepreneurs, the remaining 14% by female entrepreneurs. The presence of female entrepreneurs concentrates mainly in the field of trade and other services.
